Activewear for hot climates
In Gulf summer conditions — routinely 40°C-plus with high humidity — the fibre choice in activewear is doing real work, and the reasons most activewear is synthetic are mechanical, not marketing.
Why synthetics dominate activewear
Polyester and nylon are hydrophobic: they do not absorb much moisture into the fibre itself, so sweat sits on the surface and moves along the fabric structure toward the outer face, where it can evaporate. This is the property brands describe as "wicking." Cotton is the opposite — it absorbs moisture readily, which is comfortable in dry heat but means a cotton t-shirt stays wet and heavy against skin during sustained sweating, and takes longer to dry between wears. For continuous high-output activity in heat, that difference is the whole reason synthetic activewear exists as a category.
What that costs
The trade-off is real. Synthetics generally breathe less than natural fibres of comparable weight, trap odour-causing bacteria more readily (because moisture sits on the surface rather than being absorbed and released), and are not biodegradable. Recycled polyester and recycled nylon perform identically to their virgin equivalents — the fibre is the same polymer — so recycled content changes the feedstock story, not the on-body behaviour; we only credit a "recycled" claim once GRS or RCS chain-of-custody documentation is on file.
Where elastane fits in
Activewear almost always blends in elastane, typically in the 5-20% range depending on how fitted the garment is, for stretch and recovery during movement. Higher elastane percentages reduce breathability further, which is a real cost against the fit benefit — a compression legging trades airflow for support in a way a looser training short does not need to.
Where natural fibres still have a role
Merino wool base layers are a genuine counter-example: fine merino manages moisture well and resists odour longer between washes than synthetics do, which is why some hot-climate and desert-hiking gear uses it despite wool's reputation as a cold-weather fibre. It is a different trade-off — merino is more delicate and more expensive per garment than polyester — but it is a legitimate option, not a marketing gimmick.
What to look for
- Composition percentage for the main fibre and for elastane separately.
- Whether a "recycled" claim names GRS or RCS specifically, with documentation, rather than an unverifiable "eco" label.
- Fit: a looser cut in a hot climate reduces how much fabric contacts skin, regardless of fibre.
